🎯 About this course
You can already run a Linux machine. This course teaches you to run them in the cloud: what a cloud account is made of, how to give people the least rights, how to launch and connect to servers safely, how to keep data with volumes and snapshots, how to put servers behind a load balancer and a name, how to watch them and their cost, how to describe the whole thing in a file and change it with a plan you have read, and how to design for the day a zone fails. Every exercise names who needs it and why, uses a simulated cloud account and servers that behave like the real ones, and ends with a check of the effective state rather than the command you meant to type.
By the end you will be able to
- Describe the parts of a cloud account (regions, zones, instances, images, volumes) and compare the cost of different sizes.
- Use profiles, roles and tags to give people the least rights they need and to find out who owns a resource.
- Configure key pairs, security groups, the metadata service and cloud-init so that a server can be reached and starts configured.
- Use volumes, snapshots and images to keep data and to replace servers instead of repairing them.
- Configure a load balancer with a health check and a DNS name, and read metrics, alarms, events and cost.
- Use a stack file with validate, plan and apply to describe and change an account, and find and repair drift.
- Evaluate a design against zone and region failure using RPO, RTO and a rehearsal.
- Analyse the parts of a cloud, its identity chain and its describe, plan and apply cycle, and read a running service and its bill as one picture.
